Top tips for hiring a car at Shannon Airport

  • When arriving in Ireland, car hire at Shannon Airport (SNN) is very convenient, and you have a wide array of car hire companies to choose from. There are around seven car companies officially based at the airport where you can collect your car. There are other car hire companies who claim to be at the airport, but you will need to take a shuttle to their parking yard. The main companies at Shannon Airport are Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, Avis, Budget, Enterprise and Europcar. Do your research, and based on your needs and budget, make an informed decision.
  • There is nothing more time-consuming than going through the paperwork and deciding on a car after a long journey, so make sure you pre-book your car hire at Shannon Airport through KAYAK a day or two before you fly. When you do this, you can arrive and go straight to your car hire counter, where they will have your car and keys waiting for you. You can fill in the necessary admin details and then proceed on your journey.
  • If you are the type of person who doesn’t like bus tours or having set plans, then Shannon Airport car hire is recommended for you. By hiring your own car, you have more travel freedom, lots more space for Irish tour souvenirs and a chance to find places the public tours don’t make it to. Booking a car from one of the main car companies at Shannon Airport sets you up for really experiencing Ireland as it should be seen.
  • Ireland is known for its winding and narrow roads, and sometimes, excited travellers miss the fine print. Although a decent credit card will seem enough to cover you, don’t risk the chance. It’s better to pre-book your car hire at Shannon Airport through KAYAK beforehand so you can research the insurance policy, making sure it has decent enough cover to protect you from any unexpected situations.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire at Shannon Airport for €27 or less
  • Book your car hire at Shannon Airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about hiring a car at Shannon Airport

  • What travel documentation do I need to hire a car at Shannon Airport?

The basic requirements you need for Shannon Airport car hire are a valid driver's licence, a credit card and to be within the required average age limits. You can arrive at the airport and hire a car from any of the official hire counters, but to save yourself some time, pre-book your chosen car through KAYAK before you arrive, so you can save some stress and enjoy your journey sooner rather than later. Each car hire company should provide a list of requirements before you leave, so you can preemptively make sure you have all documentation ready for your trip.

  • What is the recommended car to hire in Ireland, an automatic or manual?

Manual cars are generally cheaper vehicles to hire when booking your car hire at Shannon Airport, but sometimes cheaper is not always the best option, especially if you are driving the sometimes winding and narrow roads of Ireland. Automatic cars will give you a more relaxed journey and more control over unknown territory. If you are experienced in manual driving, then consider the more familiar choice for your chosen car.

  • Where do I find the offices for car hire at Shannon Airport?

The main car hire counters at Shannon Airport can be found at the service desk in the arrivals hall. Here you can show the booking details you made through KAYAK, confirm your details and check your car out. It should be less than a minute walk to your car hire car park. It’s best to book your car hire at Shannon Airport in advance, to avoid unnecessary bus transfers outside of the airport to distant car hire companies.

  • How much does it cost to hire a car at Shannon Airport?

On average a car hire at Shannon Airport costs €41 per day.

  • Which car hire companies will pick you up at Shannon Airport?

Car hire companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Shannon Airport to off-airport locations include Easirent, Budget, Thrifty, Dollar, Hertz, CARHIRE.ie, and Alamo.

The car was clean and pick up and drop off were very easy. However I never received an invoice/contract for the rental. This has led to confusion over how much I paid and what I was paying for. I would have loved to have seen a breakdown of what I was paying for.

Budget has definitely become more budget over the years. My “upgraded” car was not Apple CarPlay equipped (1st time in years of renting that I’ve seen this). Wasn’t explained to me so of course I didn’t opt for gps feature. Turned into a bit of a mess as I was trying to navigate off my phone. Check in was quick, but not helpful in any meaningful was. Car was rather beat up. Scratches/dents/intetior all showing age. Drop off was supreme. I’ll give them that.

Pick up was extremely slow. Other companies served 2 customers to Sixt one. The problem seemed to be regarding insurance provided by credit card companies. I used a Chase issued card and was told that I must contact Chase and have them email a letter to confirm that they would provide coverage. I had never experienced anything like this and had to spend time on vacation dealing with it from Another country. They should make it clear at the time of reservations that this is necessary!

Returning the car was great - the rep was very helpful. And the car worked well. However, when picking up the car, we were hit with an unexpected 10 euro per day charge since I was providing my own insurance. At no point was this charged identified or explained during my booking on Kayak. This doubled the price of the rental. The rep when we picked up the car said the charge was mandatory. I felt swindled since this was a total surprise.
