While I don't recommend driving in the city of Boston, it was nice to have a car to drive outside of Boston. We enjoyed our time in Boston walking most of the time. On our last day in Boston we used a rental car to drive through New Hampshire and Maine.

If you aren’t familiar with Boston, have your GPS ready. It can be confusing. Also, there are a lot of one way streets, so watch the signs. You always have to be aware of which lane to be in. You might actually have to switch lanes frequently just to drive straight ahead, as lanes that were drive straight lanes turn into turn lanes.

I rented a car to drive home to ME so it’s a non issue but Boston is an extremely difficult city to drive in if you’ve never been here before. There is minimal signage and people from Massachusetts drive very differently. When they want to merge they just do. You must be on the defense at all times. There is always traffic too. You do not need a car if staying in the city proper in fact I’d recommend against it. Between the T and Uber and really just walking, you can get everywhere you need to, plus there really isn’t any parking except expensive garages if you’re lucky enough to find one. And if you’re renting from the airport to go elsewhere you’re fine with GPS. But with GPS trying to find something downtown? Good luck. You’ll be stuck in traffic for days and never find what you’re looking for. If you’re renting a car to drive to the cape especially in busy season I hope your flight is very early or late because you will be stuck in traffic for hours as well

Parking was the worst. You might as well Uber or bike everywhere. Driving was interesting as I'm used to lanes and there aren't many lanes here; the roads kind of just throw you in there and see who wins lol. The drivers are pretty nice though and easy to flow with. The roads were very clean and in good condition.

Driving is very challenging in Boston. Many roads that are underground and then have to double back to get on the proper highway. Actually, my Google maps did a reasonable job considering all the underground transportation.

They wouldn’t let me rent a car. My cc was compromised and even though I had 2 forms of government ID, a credit card with my name on it, 2 credit cards in Apple Pay, and my husbands credit card, they wouldn’t let me rent the car because the only physical card I had with my name on it I wasn’t able to use because the bank deactivated it for security concerns and mailed me a new one. Enterprise was not nice about it and I was stranded at the airport as I was needing to get to Maine.

Associates and staff were awesome. Problem was with the car. 1) There were numbers written with marker paint on windows that they didn’t take off, 2) there were wipes, a bottle and chip bag left in front passenger seat, 3) the car smelled like cigarettes smoke and 4) the left back tired air pressure was low they warning alerts were on the whole time in car until I pumped it before returning. The associate said that it’s possible due to weather and I took her word for it. She did offer to have the other staff to take a look but at that point, we were already at the gate and about to head out. Drove from Boston to Worcester with the air pressure warning the whole time in the rain and on the highway. Thank goodness no problems at all.

I booked a rental and set the pickup time through Kayak. There was zero mention of the hours for the pickup location and when I arrived at 5 (my scheduled time) I was unable to obtain the vehicle since it was closed. This required me to argue with enterprise on the phone to get the reservation cancelled, additional charges, and then I had to pay for Uber to drive me to the next rental car location which was 24 hours- that was a 3 hour Uber ride.

I was misled by the person who served me. At first she told me she had no vehicles available. Seeing that I had to drive quite far, he told me that he only had electric vehicles. When I told him that it could not be that, he told me that by paying more he could offer me a gasoline one. That's not how things are done, in the end I paid the extra for the necessity and urgency, but never again.

Literally every single person on every window at the Boston Logan Budget counter were smiling, friendly, efficient, gracious and kind, and got all of us in line - and there were a lot of us in that 3-Times around line waiting - served and processed quickly and easily, and with the most pleasanr of demeanors possible. The check in line was long with very few agents to check people in at peak time. I was given a car that was clean, but didn’t feel safe to drive (whole car shook when braking, accelerating was a task). The agent told me there was fuel “nearby” so I opted to prepay for a tank to avoid driving around or getting lost, however upon return “nearby” actually meant right next to/in the rental car area. Had I known this, I’d have spent $20 filling my half tank versus $75 for their full tank. That’s a bit of a scam.

Pickup was a nightmare. My flight arrived at 3:30pm. I wasn’t on the road with a car until after 4:45. That’s >75 minutes! And I followed their instructions for fast pickup or it would have been longer. Also they gave a spiel about MA law saying Hertz would charge us hundreds per day if their car was in an accident and insurance won’t cover it, basically forcing us to get extra insurance and doubling the price. We wanted to go to eastern CT. Never flying into Boston again. Besides that it was good: nice car, clean, easy drop-off.

Excellent! Fast, easy pick up and drop off and AMAZING customer service from Julio, they go above and beyond! Got my partner and I a Lyft home and ice cold bottled water - didn’t even have to ask! Will absolutely be using Hertz - Freeport in Boston for any car rental needs I have as long as I live here. Thank you!!!!!

I showed up with a prepaid reservation, ID and forms of payment, and even went to the trouble of checking in online. I spent 2:30 hours in front of the counter and on hold with Hertz customer support before we finally figured out the issue their system was having and got me my car. It was an absolute nightmare. Never again.

I booked my car for 48 hours, but when I tried to drop it off after 47 hours, I learned the drop off location had closed 30 minutes earlier. Because the location was closed at the expiration time of my reservation, they charged me an extra day It would have been nice, when I picked up the car, if they had pointed out that the return location was going to be closed at 5pm on Saturday, as I could have easily been there by the 4pm closing time.

Pick up was painful! Waited over 45 minutes to get to the agent. She was nice enough but then gave me a car that was too big and I took it because I just wanted to get out of there… as I was about to drive out I wanted a smaller car so I had to go back inside (and wait) for the car I originally wanted

Double charged (not pending holds--actual charges) and still waiting for a response from the company. Many pre-trip messages insisting that I should check in online to "skip the desk and go straight to the car." Fortunately I didn't do that, because upon arrival, numerous unhappy travelers were turned away at the garage and sent back to the desk to check in. There were physical signs everywhere asking people to check in online and go straight to the garage. Terrible treatment at the desk. The person lied and said, verbatim, "We only have electric cars right now." and asked if I needed instructions on how to find charging stations. I insisted on a gas car and suddenly he was able to make one available--for twice the price we had reserved online! Don't lie to me and say there are not any gas cars then. Bad service in general too. He asked me how to spell my name WHILE actively holding my photo ID, and then later asked "What kind of card is that" after I had paid. (He meant Visa vs. Mastercard, which, again, you have my card. Stop wasting my time.) Car center console was dirty with brown sticky residue. Horrible experience start to finish, and I'm still not even finished since I'm still waiting for the charges to be corrected.

I accidentally rented an electric car… in thrifts defense I did not read the description before I purchased. It wasn’t until I was 30m away from the airport that I realized. Took forever to charge the car. The car only had 200mi on it to empty when I rented it. Also did not interact with anyone to get the car it was all online, turned in the keys to a human but that’s it.

Wildly inconvenient. I was given an electric rental that was not fully charged. I spent much of my vacation frantically looking for chargers to get it charged and wasted time I had planned for visiting instead on waiting for a rental car to charge. There should be warning or pop up pr some kind of instructions to renter that they are receiving a fully electric car so they know ahead of time and can swap if need be.

Customer service was great! The only problems were the price doubling form the first quote, and now a $78 toll charge. I did go through some tolls, but certainly not $78 worth. Ended up being WAY more expensive than I planned.

Be very careful when selecting your car if they send you the option to go “skip the line and go straight to your car.” My only option was an electric car (EV) and I clicked the icon. That seemed a bit sneaky. The Dollar staff was able to help me, but it took some time to switch out the car. Otherwise, everyone was very nice and the car I drove away with was new and very clean.

I don't enjoy booking a car by entering my information and credit card online, then getting a text message to filll out more info, take photos of my license, sign, so I can expedite pickup. Then I still have to go to a counter and do all that again. 3 times. Book online, walk to a car and get in. So easy. But no. And I was a given a much smaller car then I anticipated. You have too many classifications of cars that are not clearly delineated when booking. I'll be going with Hertz next time even if they cost more.

My experience was outstanding! Excellent car, spotless and fun to drive. I left my phone in the car and went back to retrieve it. The customer service rep took my information and went looking for the car. Ten minutes later she came back with it in her hands. What a great relief 😅

Pros:

Easy pick up and drop off for the most part at the airport except the National employees weren’t at the counter when flights got in making a great many people standing in line for both National and Alamo so the Alamo people could help us.

Cons:

Car smelled like something had been either in the car and got moldy or a wet animal had been inside causing the first day to be almost Unbearable to drive in.
