KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Los Angeles

  • Get ready to explore the dazzling sights of Los Angeles on the road trip of a lifetime. When you rent a car on your vacation, you will enjoy the freedom of discovering each corner of the city at your own pace. Rather than relying on public transport, opt for a hire car to easily navigate this sprawling city. Don’t miss the beaches, never-ending boulevards, or the Hollywood Hills -- all easily reached by car.
  • If you are flying into Los Angeles International Airport, you need to be aware that all the hire car companies are off-site. When you land, you will need to exit your terminal and use the courtesy shuttles. Your first option for your pickup is to go to the Lower/Arrivals Level islands outside baggage claim and wait by the "hire Car Shuttles" sign. Alternatively, you can go to the LAX Shuttle Airline Connection and take a shuttle bus to the Remote hire Car Depot.
  • Driving in Los Angeles can be challenging due to the city’s infamous traffic. Therefore, as a visitor, you should look out for Carpool and High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes. You will be able to spot these designated lanes on most of LA’s freeways. Whilst HOV lanes are found on the far left, you can spot a Carpool lane from the diamond painted on the road. To use these lanes, you must have at least 2 people in the car.
  • During weekdays, rush hour in Los Angeles starts between 5:00 am and 10:00 am. In the afternoon the roads are busy from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, although you should avoid driving on a Friday. You can also expect heavy traffic on weekend evenings, especially in or out of downtown and Hollywood. The best way to avoid traffic is to stick to driving through the connecting neighborhoods. Thankfully, the city is set out in a grid, so you have a variety of options for crossing town.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire in Los Angeles for €41 or less
  • Book your car hire in Los Angeles at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Full-size car hire in Los Angeles are around -53% cheaper than other car types, on average

If you are renting a vehicle in LA be sure to check your insurance coverage ( automobile and credit card) as you can save a lot of money by not having to purchase from a car rental company. Understand if you plan on using any toll roads and get a transponder from the rental company so you don’t rack up an unnecessary expense. Book a vehicle to suit your needs and get something that gets good gas mileage. Gas is around $5 a gallon around LA.
Verified travelerMar 2024
If you find a rental place you like, stick with them. I'd like to continue with U-Save when the need arises. They were helpful, courteous and it was easy in and out when getting vehicle.
Verified travelerMar 2024
If you’re going to lax, be prepared for a line up. John Wayne drop off was helpful and easy.
Verified travelerApr 2024
At LA was everything easy and quick to star the journey. My only concern is about the cleanness of the car, since we picked up the car, it was not as expected.
JeffreyMar 2024
Don't rent too small or too large. You want visibility, but you also need to navigate down residential streets with vehicles parked on both sides.
DavidMar 2024
Pick up was a bit confusing to get there but good after that
Verified travelerFeb 2024
Definitely rent a car. Do not waste money on taxi. It’s cheaper to rent a car than to take a taxi. California is worth to see it !
TYRAJan 2024
You definitely need a car in Los Angeles to get around. You'd pay more in uber fees than paying for a rental
Verified travelerDec 2023
Strongly consider renting from Budget Car Rental. I have several times in the past and never experienced an issue.

Lots of stop and go driving in Los Angeles. Renting a hybrid electrics car is a great investment.

Driving in LA is not as bad as you may expect, the traffic is the worst when you get stuck on the highway during rush hour. Parking in city may be difficult to find depending on where you are but there is always a garage nearby, and quite a few have EV charging capabilities.
T2020Feb 2024
Read reviews before choosing a rental company , call to confirm if any hidden charges. Make sure get all documentations needed to show them( for example, insurance card) if you don’t want to buy from the rental company. Set your GPS “ no toll” if you don’t want to get fined

driving in Los Angeles is always a mess, plan ahead, take your time and try to go against traffic in rush hours, some parkings in tourist areas are way expensive, do your research beforehand

Verified travelerNov 2023
Driving from LAX to Anaheim and back is not a hard drive. There will be traffic in and out of LAX just leave yourself time. If you don’t need to take a turn off or exit for a number of miles /km stay in the middle lanes. If you have multiple people, get in the carpool lanes, just leave enough distance to get over to your exits (2miles/3.5km).
Verified travelerOct 2023
Choose high name brand rentals, like Budget or Hertz. The cost seems higher but will have better coverage, cars, and a smooth and quick process. Rental companies with lower prices will end up having more hidden fees and issues that will result in similarly priced rentals but with 10x the problems.
Verified travelerNov 2023
Ace rent a car was great! Be aware that they try to track additional fees and didn't show me the contract until after payment. I tried to cancel and they slashed the price by more than half.

Make sure you have some form of GPS as cell phones don't always work when there is fires. A paper map would help. Be alert when driving and don't speed.

LOTS of traffic. Plan ahead.
Verified travelerSep 2023
Book online for better price. Do some research about the provided insurance cover to ensure this suits you. They try to sell the toll included for additional cost which is way higher than what you might have to pay in case of using a toll road. I travelled in 7 states and did not come across a single unavoidable toll road.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Make sure you use the major car rental agency when possible. Completely videotape the car when you’re taking it out check all your documentation because these little outfits try to scam you nickel dime all day long. It’s worth millions of dollars to them and commissions to the agents taking advantage of customers specially senior citizens is, a serious offense.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Coming from the East Coast, we were worried about the famous LA traffic and parking. In actuality, during our 5 night stay in West Hollywood, any where we drive to, the traffic wasn’t too bad. Meter parking & public parking garages were plentiful & reasonably priced.
AbigailJul 2023
There is a lot of traffic & it helps to have a passenger check your blind spots. Stay out of express lanes (as they are basically toll roads). Parking can be tight but just takes some extra looking around.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Rent from a higher end car rental company, not Ace. They’ll pick you up directly at the airport. The price may be more, but it will be such a better experience.

Driving in LA is fairly straight forward but not for the faint of heart, as it is very very busy, and people drive fast. Traffic congestion can change drive times very quickly, leading to unexpected delays, so try and allow lots of wiggle room for your plans.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Don't. Fly into another city. Just kidding, kind of. Know what your route will be and how to navigate heavy traffic. We didn't spend any time in LA, just headed up the coast and then over to the mountains.
KaipoJul 2023
Remember that when you book online, they typically tack on $200-$250 in a security deposit. Though you get it back in the end, the security deposit isn’t as high if you book straight through budget’s website.

If you go to one of the cheap off airport, bargain companies, make sure that you read all the terms and conditions, and bring a copy of your insurance policy declarations page.

Traffic was really heavy during rush hour mornings and after work, avoid driving during these times. Congestion can cause 15-20 mins of delays from one destination to another. Pay attention to highways on summit and valley. Also, pay attention to the HOV lanes that required fast trek transponder as there will be hefty surcharge from car rental if you went inside HOV that requires that. You can set "avoid tolls" on your Google map.
Verified travelerJul 2023

Driving in Los Angeles is a new experience from most of the United States. Very aggressive. Parking is all parallel on the streets if you can find it or you’re paying $$ to park in a garage.

AndyMay 2023
Don’t let the rental companies up-sell toll passes unless you are sure you will need them. You probably won’t. LA drivers generally consider a turn signal as a an invitation to speed up into the space you want to move into. I learned to signal just before changing lanes. Many drivers in LA don’t signal at all.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Use a reputable rental car agency like Budget, Hertz, etc. The cheaper options have a different shuttle lot and very bad communication. Beyond that they have hidden fees that ultimately bring the price up to the same or more than your average car rental place. The smaller agencies exist to take advantage of renters, especially visitors from abroad.

I had booked in advance and got a confirmed reservation for a SUV but when I went to the Hertz office in LA, the car was not available. The staff just shrugged saying a conformation does not mean the car is available. Really? What else do I need a confirmed reservation for but to make sure the desired car is really there? They gave me a car that was damaged, tank half empty, dirty, low tire pressure warning on, much to small. I had to cramp 5 people with luggage into a compact. Calling Hertz was useless, I never got a chance to talk to a real person. I had to physically drive to different locations and ask to get the right car. Finally I did, but this took the first day of vacation.

The car was extremely clean and it was great. The pickup location was a bit confusing, Initially I was not specifically aware that the pickup location was at the Marriott hotel. The address indicated the specific location; however, when the rental indicated it was through Hertz, I took the Hertz shuttle to the Hertz rental location. The Hertz rental location is nearby the actual pickup location and it did not say anywhere on my rental that I was picking up from the Marriott location. A simple indication it was Marriott location would have been great.

Everything went perfect with my car rental the entire trip. The only problem that leaves a sour taste in my mouth, which is making me leave a less than positive review, is that when I went to pick up the car I was charged a “Young Driver Fee.” While I am under 25, I had previously confirmed over the phone with an employee at the store that presenting my AAA membership card would wave the young driver fee. However when I land in Los Angeles to pick up my car, I am charged practically double what I expected. The employee at the counter informed me that because I “did not book the rental through AAA,” I would not qualify for the discount. Very unprofessional. My family has used Hertz for all of our vacations growing up, and now that I am taking my own trips I felt comfortable going with a company I knew. After this I may reconsider my loyalties.

I reserved a regular SUPPLIER CHOICE vehicle, and when I arrived at the Herz in North Hollywood they claimed that I reserved an EV, which I did not. I showed them my reservation that clearly says "Supplier Choice" and they still refused to allow me to take a regular vehicle. They said I had to take their EV, BUT the one they wanted to give to me only had around 51% battery and would only take me "161 miles" according to the agent. The whole purpose of me renting a car was because I needed to travel yesterday so I had to have something that would take me around 400 miles. He said my only option would be to upgrade to their only available SUV. As I had to travel that day, I had no choice, and was subsequently charged an extra $212.28 to drive it off the lot. After I was forced to pay the extra fee, they told me their SUV had an empty tank. So, I had to wait at the Herz location for 45+ minutes for them to fill it. Once I was able to drive it away with a full tank, the car was dirty and the minute I got on the freeway the "Oil Change" light came on. I would like, at the very LEAST a refund of the upgrade charge since it was not my fault Herz booked me for the incorrect vehicle type. But they refuse to help me. Also for giving me practically no option but to upgrade for an incredibly steep additional price just to give me a faulty car that needed gas, oil, and was dirty. Because they have not helped me at all with any of these issues, I won’t be renting with Hertz again.

The hertz representative said they could not honor my prepaid agreement. First, the representative indicated he didn’t have any vehicles available, even though I had a confirmed prepaid reservation. Then he initiated that if I wanted a vehicle, I would have to pay an additional 200 dollars, which I did. This was a terrible experience

Gave me the car with half a tank and said to return it that way but when I returned it they said it had to be a full tank. Luckily I had paperwork proving it but I don’t think I should have to go through that.
