Top tips for hiring a car at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway airport
Getting your own car hire at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport will allow you to get a vehicle that suits your travel needs. Arizona is a city designed around driving and by booking ahead, you can have the vehicle of your choice waiting for you so you can get on the road as soon as possible. Your own vehicle gives you total freedom to travel, both within Phoenix and further out into the Arizona desert or even across the border into Mexico.
You can get through the service desk quicker when you book with Alamo and use their accelerated check-in service. This allows you to upload photos of your documents, such as your driving licence and passport ahead of time. Those documents can then be verified online so when you reach the desk, all that needs to be confirmed is your payment information. Alamo also offers a self-service check-in, a great option for experienced travellers who want to skip the queue. If you're looking for the most flexibility on timing, Easirent is open 24h a day.
If you are looking to avoid crowds when collecting your car hire at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, the terminal is quietest on the weekends and throughout the week it is usually busiest in the middle of the day and the afternoon. The best time to pick up and return your vehicle will likely be between 16:00 and 23:59 as this is the quietest time when most providers will be open.
If you wish to take your vehicle across the border into Mexico, you will most likely need to arrange this when you pick your vehicle up at the terminal. Most providers will allow you to take your vehicle into Mexico and it is a great way to make full use of the freedom your own vehicle provides. However, they may limit the types of vehicles you can use and you will likely be required to pay extra insurance calculated at a per-day rate.

The car was very comfortable. Although there were a few stains in the vehicle when we got it, and there was a slightly bad smell as well. But overall, we had a good experience.

I didn’t rent from Hertz and don’t know why I received this survey.
It was easy to rent and return the car. The pick up and return was right across the street from the airport..

When we arrived to get our car all they had left were electric cars. We were never told it could be electric . We are in our mid to late 70s and don’t have a clue how to charge it. My husband spent 2 days finding a place that he was able to use then stood in the 85 degree sun to figure out how to charge it, after someone at the other charger helped him download the app ect .My advise do not rent an electric car to the elderly in Mesa .

Low tire pressure light on dashboard. Two tires under inflated. Why not inflated to correct tire pressure by staff?

My experience booking through Kayak could not have been WORSE. Through Kayak, I made a car reservation with Avis (one day, Sun Jan 26, Mesa Gateway airport pickup, Santa Fe airport drop off). Confirmation number 19969723US4. Total rental fee - as per email confirmation received Mon, Jan 20 - was $75.69. When I arrived at the Mesa car rental counter on Jan 26, the agent processed the rental and asked me to insert my credit card for payment. I asked for the total charge before doing so. He told me that the rental fee was $201 USD. VERY LONG story short, after showing him my rental confirmation, arguing my case for over an hour, speaking to an AVIS customer service supervisor on the phone, I was told there was "nothing they could do." Of course, they claimed that the difference in price was because I had "booked with a third party" (Kayak). And of course, they had me over a barrel because I had to get to Santa Fe that day. Finally, in tears, I agreed to pay the $201. I was then told my reservation had been canceled! The stress, not to mention financial cost, of this experience has left me shaking. I need to rent a car to return to Mesa airport on Feb 12 and I am filled with anxiety just thinking about it. If Kayak and Avis want to do business with each other, you need to get on the same page. Do not offer prices that will not be honoured at the counter. Do not tell me this is a matter to be taken up with Avis (I have contacted their customer service and they are not responding). YOU TWO - Kayak and Avis - need to sort this out. It is not my job to get you both on the same page. I am currently preparing to take my case to the next level for attention.

They gave me a gas guzzler instead of a compact vehicle and gas was overpriced and taxes ended up being an extra $200 just for gas

Booked a car through kayak, got to the Avis location at the Mesa Airport and they told me they had 0 cars available. Guy behind the counter couldn’t care less it was 8pm, I had no car, just gave me a pamphlet on how to get a refund. How is this possible? I had reserved the car hours in advanced with a confirmation. Absolutely ridiculous. Had to spend $60 to uber home because “airport fees” as the uber driver described and I lived less than 10 miles away and still had to find another rental car. Ended up renting with Turo. Even with the fees, overall better experience.
