Denver hotels can suit every taste, comfort, and budget – and that’s just Downtown! Whether you want to feel at home in a historic neighborhood or in the heart of the action in a modern high-rise you will find lodgings that cater to your every whim.
Where you stay in Denver might depend, in part, on which transportation option you prefer and if you arrive at Union Station first. Downtown Denver has many modern and historic hotels alike within walking distance of this transportation hub, sports fields, cultural institutions, and fabulous restaurants. The Crawford Hotel is inside of Union Station so for those who arrive by train, this will be the closest option of all!
While the words “convention center” may not, at first glance, sound like an open invitation, do not skip this option. In the winter, there is an artificial sledding hill and an ice sculpture display to brighten things up just a tad.
Between the airport (Denver International Airport – DEN) and D owntown Denver is a destination in its own right: the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center, which is a Marriott property. While the words “convention center” may not, at first glance sound like an open invitation for families, the property features a detailed waterpark and resort pool – a veritable mecca for families. The fun isn’t limited to the warm months though- in the winter, there is an artificial sledding hill and an ice sculpture display to brighten things up just a tad. A selection of restaurants, a spa and two gift shops add to the varied offerings here – fun for the whole family.
Moxy is part of Marriott and found worldwide as a stylish and affordable take on the brand’s traditional hotels. Rooms can be found at Moxy for under $200 per night, and guests receive a complimentary cocktail upon check in and have use of bicycles to ride around town. The Cherry Creek area is mostly known for the Cherry Creek mall and upscale shops in Cherry Creek North, just across the road from the mall. Cherry Creek North is only a 5-minute drive from downtown, but you get the feel of being in a neighborhood rather than the city itself with local schools and posh homes nearby.
If a 5-star hotel that offers peerless views of the mountains, a relaxing spa to wind down a couple of gears and a brilliant pool sounds soothing, look no further than the Four Seasons Hotel Denver. Befittingly, “Edge Restaurant,” on the ground floor of the premises offers a varied, classy menu to match the occasion – though I’m told that room service is also a popular option here as well. Stretch those legs with a stroll to the nearby theater complex – or the Denver Art Museum, where free entry for those under the age of 18 has to be a draw for those with kids.
You can’t beat the location and rates of Hostel Fish, which is near Coors Field and a short walk to downtown. There are private bedrooms available for a slightly higher price. The rooms are above Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox, a bar with live music and dancing throughout the week and on weekends. It’s a lively scene here!
Live like a local with an extended stay in the city’s hippest neighborhood of the moment. Catbird, one of the newest additions to the RiNo neighborhood, offers single-night stays, as well as long-term stays and residences. There are discounts for certain extended stays, so if you need a place for over seven or 21 days, the price will go down. The studio rooms include a full kitchen, king-size bed, and sofa bed, plus access to amenities like the stunning rooftop with yard games and fire pits. As long as this is your home for now, get cozy in the lobby’s overstuffed sofas and plush banquettes and order in from the Catbird Kitchen.
Hyatt Place Pena Station Denver Airport sits halfway between the airport and Downtown Denver. Serviced by a light rail stop, the hotel contains a restaurant, bar, indoor pool and an interactive lobby that offers visitors the option of playing games. Take a moment or two to admire the public art collection that this same lobby is draped in. Animal lovers will also be pleased to read that pets are welcome here – and the rate, which can be under $200 per night –, also includes the most important meal of the day – to get your mornings started with a refreshing jolt.
It doesn’t get any closer to the airport because, at The Westin Denver International Airport, you will stay in the airport itself. This said, you will be paying for the convenience of not having to get up early for a flight or needing to head into the city after a long flight – whether or not it’s worth it is of course up to you. A bar, deli and a full service restaurant are but a few perks of the place.
The Brown Palace Hotel & Spa Autograph Collection has hosted rock stars, sitting U.S. Presidents, and other notable guests since it opened in 1892. The building is triangular in shape and the interior is an atrium that rises several floors to a stained-glass ceiling. A traditional tea hosted in the stunning lobby is a sellout every holiday season. It’s worth a visit even if you’re not an overnight guest.
The Crawford Hotel is part of Union Station, the city’s main transportation hub. The hotel is in a floor above the station and downstairs is a Grand Hall where you might hear live music, meet a friend, have a cocktail or a beer, or select where to dine from the list of several on-site restaurants.
As part of the McGregor Square development across from Coors Field, home to the Colorado Rockies baseball team, the Rally Hotel offers a luxurious stay at the heart of the action, any given baseball season. A rooftop pool, commanding views or the baseball stadium and close proximity to Union Station where travelers can catch the light rail to the airport are some of the perks of this hotel.
Opened in 1891, a block from Union Station, The Oxford Hotel is a delightful mix of history and modern amenities. Do not miss the Cruise Room and Art Deco bar inside the hotel. Today, it’s owned by Dana Crawford, a well-known local preservationist. If the name rings a bell – a separate hotel to this one (The Crawford Hotel, covered earlier in this section) is also named after her.
If your style is historic bed and breakfasts, getting to these with luggage in tow will require a short car ride to the Capitol Hill or Highlands neighborhoods.
Capitol Hill Mansion Bed and Breakfast Inn lies at the throbbing heart of the Capitol Hill neighborhood, one of the city’s oldest areas which is surrounded by major attractions such as the Denver Botanic Gardens, the Colorado Capitol Building, and Cheesman Park. Nearby are the Denver Art Museum, the Clyfford Still Museum, and Civic Center Park. Capitol Hill has long been considered a LGBTQ-friendly neighborhood in Denver. This lovingly restored home is filled with intricately carved wood, marble fireplaces, and cozy rooms inside the brick and stone façade. Free on-site parking is a welcome amenity here, and so is the generous happy hour each evening.
If you’re planning a family outing to the theater or an event at the Colorado Convention Center, The Curtis Hotel is an excellent option for you. Not only does it offer a vibrant and playful atmosphere, but it also features uniquely themed rooms such as Barbie or Video Games. As you step into the hotel lobby, you’ll be greeted by a burst of color, setting the tone for a fun-filled stay. However, if you prefer a more traditional design, the hotel also offers standard rooms. Upon check-in, you’ll be treated to a fresh cookie, and everyone is welcome to enjoy classic board games in the lobby. Additionally, the hotel is pet-friendly (additional fee applies), ensuring that every member of the family can join in on the fun.
