Smaller cars are better if you can handle the reduced space. Much easier for driving the narrow roads. Some roads are barely paved. Get a map and stick to main roads if possible. Don’t trust google.

Be very sure about which pickup and drop-off points (the airport vs ferry port) you have when you book and whether you have to pickup/drop off outside of operating hours because changing those things can be a bit pricey. I was very glad that we rented a compact car because many roads are very narrow and usually go both directions, with cliffs and no barriers or lines. The only downside of the compact car is that the engine is not very strong and struggled to get up the many (steep) hills. If you know how to drive a stick-shift, it was suggested to us that the manual transmission cars are a bit better in this case than automatic. Also don’t be surprised by how much gas costs, as we used less than a quarter of a tank in two days and it cost us about 30 euros to refill.

  • It is recommended that visitors of Corfu adapt to the local rules of the road, including the use of hazard lights as a way to let other drivers know you intend on parking. Tailgating is quite common in Greece so, to prevent others from rear-ending them, drivers will often flash their hazards lights to show other drivers they intend to stop and park.
  • Pedestrian crosswalks (zebra crossings) are often meaningless in Greece and especially in Corfu. Instead of using the designated crosswalks pedestrians will simply cross when it is most convenient to them. It is highly recommended that drivers keep their eyes open for any pedestrians that may be looking like they want to hop out into the street. This warning counts double in the more popular and lively districts of Corfu.
  • Renting a car is highly recommended to all tourists visiting Corfu. This is because much of the island’s charm is found outside the main urban areas. A car is simply required if you want to see all that the island has to offer. For instance, if you would like to go from the Old Town in Corfu to the secluded cove of Paleokastritsa Beach, you could pay for a tour there or you could drive yourself in 30 minutes.

It would be great a direct contact with the local branch. I've asked around the airport and waited for over 30 min until someone shown up. Also when I booked I didn't have any filed to input the flight number so they could be aware about any flights delay hence the fact of my waiting time.
