Generator is a cool hotel, located in the Oosterpark in Amsterdam East. The building is nicely renovated, and there is a good atmosphere.
The accommodation is very basic, despite a good 200 euro per night, especially the beds are like cheap beds from Ikea that move around with every move you make. Not very comfortable.... The "bar" is more like a place in the corner of the hall where you can take a coffee with a croissant in the morning, but it closes early at night around 10:30 and then the only option is to buy a can of beer at the reception desk. I requested to rent a bike, once via mail 2 days prior to arrival and again at check-in. Both times the answer was: yes sir no problem we have plenty of bikes. But then when I finally wanted to rent a bike, they told me there were no bikes left at the hotel so I had to walk 20 minutes (they said it was 5...) to a bike shop to get one...
Location is 20 minutes from Centraal, and in a very nice neighbourhood. Being in the park is amazing. People are really nice, but I'm sure everywhere in Amsterdam has people like this.
When we arrived in the room, there were brown stains on the wall and exposed live electrical wiring almost touching the metal bed. I had to ask three times for the wall to be cleaned, and it still was not cleaned - they took a whole day to fix the wires, and we had to sleep one night with the wires touching the bed. Beer in the bar cost about €8.5 which is outrageous for a hostel, food was very expensive too and there is no kitchen to cook yourself (the rules also say you cannot bring your own food which I think is very mean). We paid about €50/night each, the floor of the room was filthy, and there was no towel for the sink or bathroom floor included. The storage pocket on the beds had not been cleaned (empty packet of cigarettes and lighter) and the bed sheets had not been fitted to the bed and I had to do this myself - for €50/night I thought this was ridiculous. The room was also very small, but had a bathroom inside. On the day we left, we had to check out at 10:00 AM and wanted to store our luggage for the day. They said this would cost €5 for a locker, which I have never seen in a hostel before. However, they gave us a locker for free due to the brown stain on the wall.
Chill atmosphere and the park nearby. Not too far away from centraal. Good places to eat around and not too busy neighbourhood. All in all everything was in good condition at the hotel.
Rooms tapwater was only hot. Showering took forever because the pressure was quite low.
The common areas were good and the room was a good size for a hostel. Was lucky to have great people in my too which made the stay even better!
The room got dusty quickly and there was no bath mat provided in the bathroom so the floor was wet very quickly.
The staff are so friendly, helpful, and kind.
