Pros: Pickup and drop off was acceptable. Front counter attendant was pleasant and polite. Vehicle was comfortable enough.
Cons: Seats had minor stains but that is to be understood with a rental car. Overall, I had no serious issues with the experience.

My Hertz Experience
Pros: It was fast, affordable and the staff was kind in answering questions.
Cons: I was unaware that there was a $200 deposit included. The computers were down at the time which made it a little bit more difficult.

Check vehicle first.
Pros: Decent comfortable ride. Good gas mileage (economy car, so it should be). Drop off/pickup went smoothly.
Cons: Car wasn't cleaned very well prior to use. Nothing major but crumbs on floor and some sand in seats. Half a tank of gas. Low tire pressure (was noted at pickup) due to weather but coupled with balding tires makes for a scary ride in a small car if you hit any wind or rain. Make sure you check car before you drive off and make sure it will be sufficient for your travels.

Not Airport Pick-up
Pros: The gentleman at the office was very friendly and helpful. I felt confident I was getting the best deal available to me. In fact, it was a bit less than the rate I'd been guaranteed. Similarly, the drop-off process was quick and simple. The Ford Fiesta was a nice car, even if not all the features were activated, and it used very little gas.
Cons: I was shocked when I went to the Hertz desk at the Newport News airport and was told my reservation was for an off-site office. If I got my car at the airport, I'd have to pay $100 more. Further, there was no shuttle between the two offices so I had to take a taxi ($10 flat rate).

Cons: Deception to charge more than total quoted on reservation to my bankcard.
Cons: Upon arriving at the airport to pick up the car I had reserved. I found out that my reservation had been cancelled and I was not given a reason as to why.

bait and switch
Cons: From the start this was the worst car rental experience I've ever had. I got to the budget counter and they swiped my card. They immediately told me they wouldn't rent me a car because my credit wouldn't allow it. I never gave them permission to run my credit. Next they told me they could get me a car from avis. It was the same car they just changed the rental jacket from budget to avis and charged me $20 more. Once I got the car it was the most uncomfortable thing I've ever driven. That's not their fault it's Volkswagen to blame for that. They never asked me what car I wanted and forced me to pay more than the price I booked based on some phantom credit check they claim they did. I do not blame Kayak for this I blame the guilty patty which is Budget/Avis car rental.

Pros: Car was roomy, great on gas
Cons: No help finding car in parking garage. Person at counter was helpful on my reservation but couldn't find the car and wasted time walking around. Once I got to car had to google how to start it. Was push start I had no idea I had to have my foot on break to start it until I googled it

Cons: I had a very long wait in line (there were only two people ahead of me). The man who processed my pickup was extremely unfriendly. He offered me additional insurance and waivers. When I politely declined, he treated me as if I was ignorant while using scare tactics to get me to buy them (I'd already verified my coverage with my insurance and said as much). He then handed me my paperwork and asked me to initial in 4 different places. Apparently he assumed I wasn't going to read the paperwork - he'd overcharged me by $11. When I asked why their was a difference between my quote amount via Expedia and his amount he said he didn't know and didn't offer to look at the bill. When I continued to read he acted irritated and took the paper. He looked over it and then changed something on the computer. He said he'd put me in a different car (he didn't because he'd already gotten the keys and didn't swap the keys). He offered no other explanantion and asked me to sign again. There was no thank you or have a nice day.
Pros: The car we received was a perfect size. I love the gas mileage it got. We didn't have to spend a great deal of money on gas and time stopping to get gas. Helpful people at the airport and at the place we actually got the car from.
Cons: We did not know that the car rental place was not at the airport and there was not a shuttle to the place we had to pick up our car. That was a big shocker. The young lady at the airport called the place that we rented the car from and we were well taken care of.
The car windows were so dirty that we couldn't see out of them at night. We had asked the guy who cleans the car to clean them again but even his second round of cleaning was terrible. He acted as if we were putting him out.
Cons: Low tire pressure alarm sounded on the second day of our rental. I checked the air pressure in all four tires - over 50 psi in three tires and less than 25 in the fourth. Obviously, this is a safety issue that could have resulted in a blow out.
Avis' staff should perform simple checks like this (also oil and other fluids) as a part of their prep.
