KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Lerwick

  • Hire a car in Lerwick to give yourself the freedom to see more of the port town and the wild Shetland coasts. Drive to historical places like Fort Charlotte or Shetland Museum and Archives, which is an hour from the town centre by car, depending on traffic (there usually isn't any). Broch of Clickimin is also close to the town and is easily accessible with a hire car. Shetland is quite rural, and though there are organised tour buses, car hire is the ideal way to get around.
  • If you're flying into Lerwick, you can hire a car at Lerwick Sumburgh Airport. There are several car hire companies to choose from, such as Europcar Sumburgh, Bolts Car Hire Ltd, and Europcar Shetland Isles, among others. Approach the Lerwick car hire counters at the airport to get started after you collect your bags. The car hire desks are past baggage reclaim and security, next to the cash-point machine. Other agencies that don’t have a counter at the airport offer shuttle services to their pick-up location.
  • Driving in Lerwick is not complicated; however, you should expect the unexpected. Always be watchful when driving at night, and watch out for pedestrians and cyclists to avoid hitting them on the road. Shetland gets a lot of rain, so take care on the slippery roads. Driving during winter is more challenging, and you should ensure that your Lerwick car hire has winter tires. Slow down when driving on the icy roads and look out for black ice. You should also remember that they drive on the left side of the road.
  • Driving in the town of Lerwick is pretty easy as there is little traffic due to the low population. However, in the town centre, you may find some short periods of congestion at peak times, notably in the hour before 9 am. If you hire a car in Lerwick, you will find it a breeze to drive in most towns and along the scenic roads. Just mind pedestrians and other vehicles on the narrow two-way roads outside Lerwick, which only have room for one car. You'll have to pull to the side to allow oncoming drivers to pass.
