An SUV gets our highest recommendation for a car hire in Bourg-Saint-Maurice because of its 4X4 capabilities to handle icy/slippery roads and rugged terrain. With a good set of snow tyres, a sturdy compact car is suggested for singles/couples, while our nod goes to a passenger van if you’re on a ski weekend with a group of friends or relatives. Luxury cars with snow tyres are approved for use within town limits, but not recommended beyond this.

The legal speed limit in France is 50 km/h through residential areas and centres, but that may not always be possible in Bourg-Saint-Maurice when conditions are extreme. This also goes for driving in rural communities where 80 km/h is the approved speed. 130 km/h is the maximum speed along highways under normal conditions, so be vigilant for speed indicators when driving in ski season.

You should expect to find a few public and private outdoor/indoor garages in Bourg-Saint-Maurice for extended parking as well as street parking meters for a limited time. Usually these are Pay & Display systems with payment via cash or card. Free parking is generally available on city streets from about May to mid-December and there is also a free parking garage near the funicular stop. If you’re booking accommodations, enquire whether they provide onsite parking facilities.
