Wanting to drive a car hire in Lucerne that will be good at maintaining traction in wet winter weather means you'll be comfortable in an SUV or a 4x4. These cars are also great for driving over loose rocks and mud, which can be a result of heavy weather or melting snow. If you are looking at a luxury car hire instead, that's not a problem, but your best bet is to find an automatic with all-wheel drive. These types of cars are suitable for handling extreme weather conditions.
You'll find driving in Lucerne, and other areas in Switzerland, means slower speed limits than in the rest of the world. When driving on the Autobahn freeway, you can reach the speed of 120 km/h, but that's where the high speed ends. Urban areas generally have a limit of 50 km/h, and rural areas are just 80 km/h. If you find yourself on an expressway, a maximum speed of 100 km/h is required. Hitting these speeds is not recommended during bad weather patches. It's best to slow right down to no more than 20 km/h if the roads are wet or icy.
Parking your cheap car hire in Lucerne city centre can be a bit tricky, as Lucerne city centre is one of the more busy cities in Switzerland. If the weather is good, it's wise to park just outside the city centre and explore it on foot. With street parking being scarce in the centre of town, you might want to park in one of the parking garages. There are about three in town and the larger and more popular is at the Lucerne railway station. No matter where you decide to park, get ready for it to be charged. There is almost no free parking in Lucerne.

Pros:
the car that we received was like new, fuel efficient, and fun to drive.Cons:
We were not told upfront what the underage fee (<25yr old) would be. =129.01 SF We were charged for winter tires, in march, even though there wasn't any snow on the road (including up at the ski resorts). =32.41 And we were charged $147.84 for fueling even though we only used half a tank. This seems extremely excessive. In all, the price of our rental more than doubled and we did not find this out until after the trip. None of these excess fees were explained at the time of pick up (the contract was written in german and therefore an employee explained the details of the contract to me). I find this ridiculous, and I will not be using this company in the future. One location in Lucerne

Pros:
Fun and zippy little car to roll through the mountains of Switzerland.Cons:
The drop off location in Zurich was nearly impossible to find, even with Google Maps. It ended up being a random parking spot in a six-floor unmarked garage. The employees working there were great, but we drove around and in the building for probably 45 minutes until we found where to drop off the car.One location in Lucerne

Some Lucerne car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend always be aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Lucerne.
Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a no-deductible option to your Lucerne car hire.
