When you pick Angra do Heroismo car hire, it is important to consider the island terrain and where you are most likely to be driving. It is recommended that you hire a manual car for your visit to La Terceira, as many roads are bumpy and winding and require the extra speed and engine control that a manual gives you compared with an automatic. A compact car may be suitable for travellers who plan to stay mainly in the towns, however, and will help you drive in more crowded tourist areas where space may be limited.

The speed limit in the Azores generally complies with mainland Portugal. This means that, in urban areas, the speed limit is 50 km/h (30 mph), while on rural roads it is 80 km/h (50 mph). There are no motorways on La Terceira. If you are caught speeding in Portugal, you can be fined up to €2,500 (£2,200), so it is important to always obey local signs.

Choosing car hire in Angra do Heroismo is a great option because parking is ample and generally affordable on La Terceira. You will find some free car parks in the Angra do Heroismo centre, but these will usually be very busy. Most other car parks are pay and display and cost around €1-2 (£1-2) for short stays. You will also find some 24-hour car parks in Angra do Heroismo.
