Because of the high levels of traffic and seemingly chaotic driving, choosing a smaller, more compact rental car is often the better choice. These are easier to navigate on the roads and easier to find parking for. If you're travelling with a large group, consider renting multiple cars rather than a big vehicle. If you plan on road tripping and doing some dune driving, a 4x4 is a good way to go.

The speed limits in Al Jubail are the same as in the rest of Saudi Arabia, so you'll need to be aware of them regardless of where you drive. When on the urban roads or in built-up areas, like the city centre, stick to 45 km/h or below, even if locals drive faster. The rural roads are capped at 80 km/h. When driving on the highway or major motorways, the speed limit is usually between 120 and 125 km/h, but a few highways in the country have implemented a limit of 140 km/h. Pay attention to the road signs to be sure.

Finding free parking in the city can be difficult because of the sheer volume of cars. The free spaces in the shopping areas and city centre are usually snapped up quickly. It's also safer to park in the car parks in and around the city centre, which will give you a ticket on entry and charge you for the time you've been there. Consider finding a hotel with free parking to avoid searching for overnight parking, which can be expensive.
