The roads in Siena weren't designed to accommodate cars, and the roads are much smaller than you might be used to in any major city. Because of this, it's suggested that you stick with compact or economy car hire in Siena that doesn't take up too much space and is easy to park. If you plan on spending your time outside the city on road trips, a comfortable sedan or SUV is a good option. If you're interested in doing your part for the environment, consider booking a hybrid car.

The speed limit inside Siena walls is the same as the rest of Tuscany, and you'll have to adhere to them if you find yourself driving in and around the city. The speed limit within city walls and other built-up areas is 50 km/h. Keep in mind that it's compulsory to slow down when approaching a school, even if there are no signs indicating you to do so. The city streets in Siena and other cities nearby are very narrow, so it's best to drive down them slower than 50 km/h. If you're out on the motorways, the speed limit will range between 110 km/h and 130 km/h.

As a non-local heading into the city, your choices of parking spaces are limited. Recommended places to park are usually the hotel that you're staying at or outside of the city walls. When approaching Siena, you'll see various signposts outside pointing you towards convenient parking spaces. The free parking spaces are some of the best spaces to park in, which include a small parking space in Strada Laterina, close to the cemetery and a short walk away from the main plaza in Siena. Viale Mario Bracci is another free parking spot close by, and it’s connected to the city by public transport.
