KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Midland

  • Midland is a relatively small city in Texas and having a rental car can help you explore everything it has to offer in a relatively short amount of time. A rental car could allow you to visit all the attractions and do all the activities in your itinerary without having to worry about keeping up with anyone's schedule. Additionally, you will have the comfort that other modes of transportation may not offer, and you'll have control over who you share your personal space with. It's also cost-effective because you can rent an economy car from car rentals in Midland, and you'll have the flexibility to venture out to places like the Heart of West Texas Museum, which is about 78 miles away, at your convenience. Simply put, renting a car when visiting Midland will give you the utmost freedom to enjoy your trip.
  • The Midland International Airport has a car rental facility within the airport terminal. You'll find it on the first level across from the baggage claim. To get an ideal car for Midland, compare Midland car rentals on KAYAK, then reserve your car of choice and collect it at the airport. Once you arrive at baggage claim, go to the counter where the manager in charge will give you the contract and car key, then show you to your car. If you would rather not drive yourself from the airport, you can reserve the car at the rental agency in the city and pick it up from there.
  • Midland roads are relatively uneventful, but you need to watch out for motorcyclists and cyclists. You should also know that Midland winter roads can get quite dangerous due to black ice, snow, sleet, and ice. It's advisable to avoid such roads unless you are an experienced driver to prevent accidents. Even so, you should consider staying off the road or driving slowly and keeping a distance from the other cars, especially on Interstate 20.
  • The morning commute on Midland Road lasts from around 7am to 10am, after which it goes back to normal and peaks again from about 4pm to 8pm. However, Midland roads are usually not very busy unless you're traveling on the I-20. This is the main highway to other cities in Texas, so you can expect backed-up traffic, especially during rush hours. Some of the roads and intersections you should be wary of in Midland include Loop 250 and Midkiff Road, Big Spring and Loop 250, Midkiff and Wadley, and Loop 250 and Midland. These intersections see many accidents, so be careful when you drive through them.
  • Small hire cars in Midland are around 39% cheaper than other car types, on average

Very helpful employee at pick up, who advised me to "just park anywhere" on return. Great advice, because the return lot was crazy, no enterprise)national/Alamo slots left. I parked in Budget without a worry. The check in person complimented me on my resourcefulness. Nice SUV

Agent was more interested in his phone than helping me. Vehicle was not on the lot .... could not be found. Went back into talk to agent, and he just handed me another set of keys. I asked for new paperwork, and he reluctantly gave it to me. Second vehicle was not in area I was told, was blue and not gray (which would have helped in locating it). Asked a few questions like, if I return the car early, will I get a refund on days unused, etc and agent could not/would not answer. Was not impressed. Not. One. Bit.

Could not rent with a debit card from the airport without a flight itinerary. Was not made aware of that on this site and spent roughly $33 on an Uber. Lack of information is truly disappointing and I will use a different service from now on.

After my plane was delayed, Hertz decided to give my reserved car away to other people as there was a large conference in town that week. Ended up costing me $500 for an Uber to get to my destination because no other company had cars either. Lady at the counter was useless and made no effort to help me.
