You need to be careful with the speed limit, there are some roads where the curves are very dangerous. The traffic is heavy during peak time so I tried to avoid those. In NY there you need to pay tolls for the highways (not many) some people like to drive fast others respect that you are a tourist, I guess is similar to any city. My best advice is to follow the transit rules and speed limit, that your time because the signs are most in Serbian Languages some of which are not in English at all. You must have a sim card with navigation with you. Belgrade and around towns are beautiful and not too expensive if you are coming from America.

Be very cautious when driving in Serbia, the drivers here drive fast and usually do not signal when changing lanes. Police will enforce speed limits in certain residential areas but usually not on the freeway but speed limits change often on the freeway so be careful!

  • One tip to remember when driving in Belgrade, especially on the highway, is that is very common for drivers to use their lights to signal to other drivers on the road. Mexcar are professional scammers! We made a reservation in the morning and I had to give up a pickup time. The default time is NOON which I selected because I expected to pick the car up immediately after lunch. Around 1 o clock we headed for the airport to pick up the car but the bus was delayed and it generally took more time than we were aware of. When we finally arrived at the car rental at 14:30 there was a sign saying that they were at the parking lot and a number to call. When we called, I was flabbergasted to be informed that they rented the car to someone else. On top of that, they informed us they would still charge the full amount from our credit card since it was written in the policy of their own website, but not on the website of the broker, that they can rent the car to someone else 2 hours after pick up time. I might have been more willing to accept if they would’ve had the dignity to call us or even send a cancellation to our email but they seemed to not care at all. On top of that, there were almost no cars available anymore with normal companies around and we ended up having to pay much more at a competitor than we initially intended. Nevertheless the competitor at least saved the rest of our holiday but the brutality of Mexcar left a bitter taste. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

They are the worst company I ever rented with. They don’t have explanation of the charge they deducted from my deposit. They are not reliable and charged me extra €80 for just 40 mins delay in returning the car. The delay was because we were not given exact location at the airport to return. We kept going around airport for 25 mins and then queued just to find out the man who will collect the car is in the parking. A reputable company will never do such kind of acts and they should refund back €80 immediately to avoid any repercussions.

Employee was 10 minutes late on pick-up and 5 minutes late on drop-off motivating it with the traffic. I was driving on the same streets but somehow I managed to be there on time. It is okay if you miscalculated - but at least you should give your client a call. Being late without a notice is rude and unprofessional. At least this time Sixt did not try to charge me for a damage that was there before me.

They could try to not fraud with vehicle damages. They tried to incriminate me a scratch on the side of the car. Thank god I took pictures of it. However, I did not photo under the vehicle. So they then tried to incriminate that as well. But since that damage was below the scratch they did not "have in their database" - they could not prove I did it. Also being stuck to pickup time without being able to select it - sucks. I work. How am I supposed to pick the car up and return it at 12 PM?

I did not pick up the car because they didn't have a car that I had booked. Tha car was so called with a failor and they didn't have another one to replace it. There I stood with my suitcases with no car! Very poor and extremely unprofessional way of doing business.

The person working the counter found me an alternative way to rent a car but it was more expensive

Cons:

There was no car available for the reservation I made. I ended up paying more for a lesser car through a private renter which might not have had insurance but I had no choice as I needed a car urgently. It’s disappointing to see that the reservation through Kayak was worthless. Will not book car rental through this site again.

Got the car I reserved.Everything was good until I returned the car back.Sales person pointed to rear wheel that had scratches and told that he doesn’t remember seeing them before.Luckily i took the video of whole car and proved that scratches were there before.Obviously people don’t do right job of marking damages in their books.Be careful when renting,record and take pictures of whole car or you might pay damages that do not belong to you. Thanks

Terrible!! Second time trying to book with them. First time they lost the reservation they said it wasn’t in the system so we had to search for another company on the spot- this time they completely changed the price when we arrived and they said since we booked on the American website our deposit will be the whole value of the car! So they wanted to put a hold of 10,000€ on our Visa which is ridiculous! And they were very rude about it and didn’t offer us any better option and we had to walk around searching for another company at the airport and we found one with a reasonable deposit! We will NEVER book with Avis again.

Long waiting for pick-up, nobody was present, got a too smal car where we could not put our luggage, my fellow passenger had to keep one big bag on the lap, when mentioned that to the staff, very rude answer there is nothing else with the explanation that the system allows more bookings then the number of the available cars, at drop off again nobody, all in all very bad experience and no excuses from any of the staff whatsoever

My experience with Payless was horrible. I was coming from America and reserved from Kayak and Payless and when I came to Belgrade to pick up the car from Payless, they said that there was not a confirmation or reservation at all. I called a couple of days before this to make sure that everything was okay and Payless and Kayak said that everything was okay. In Belgrade they told me that I shouldn’t of reserved Payless from America and that they do not take reservations that were reserved in America. I asked the workers at Payless in Belgrade what now and instead of getting the car for 196 euros that i already reserved, I had to pay 500 and something dollars on top of already paying for a car. I am very disappointed and that i lost money and time for waiting and that I was late to a very important meeting. I will never reserve from Payless, and my business is very important to me and my family and our community.

It’s not Payless. It is Avis, simple like that. Some very nice ladies when I picked the car and some nasty people when I returned. They will charge you for the air that you breathe around them, and all that without giving you receipts or giving you the proof what they charging you for. And all that with sarcastic smile on his face. Now, for three weeks I’m trying to contact them and make complaints, four emails sent, even more phone calls made. Nothing. I guess it’s time to call credit card company and try to have money back.

This was a scam. Once i reserved the car they changed the type (i reserved a minivan and few days before pickup they informed me that i will be picking up a small SUV). When i argued about their change they said that they never had such minivan and that this must have been a mistake on the website. Fortunately i was able to get all of my money back. Don't rent with them to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
