Compact vehicles are ideal for car hire in Matsumoto, as they are suited to navigating the narrow, one-way streets. A compact vehicle will also serve you well on narrow roads like the R158, which stretches between Matsumoto and Hirayu. If you’re travelling in a large group or with a lot of luggage, then you may wish to consider upgrading to a mid-sized vehicle like a Toyota Corolla. This will give you extra storage space and leg room without making it difficult to traverse the narrow streets.

In downtown Matsumoto, the speed limit is generally 30 km/h on small sidestreets and one-way lanes. Speed limits of 40, 50 and 60 km/h can be found on roads within the city limits, so keep an eye out for signs to ensure you’re driving at the correct speed. If you head out onto an expressway, speed limits vary between 80 and 100 km/h, so once again, it’s crucial to pay attention to the street signs to ensure you’re following the rules.
