Spend a little extra and definitely take out the full Insurance, it’s worth it!! Using rental agency based close to the airport pays off. Convenient pick up and drop off was a bonus and took out a lot of stress! Most of the rental companies close to the airport also have a free shuttle service, so no hassles trying to organize and spend extra cost to get to and from the agency for pick up or drop off.

Used the vehicle to cross from Akaroa, Christchurch to Hokitika via the Lewis Pass - with a couple of overnight stops on the way. Car was excellent - cruise control is great on the long stretches of straight road. Vehicle comfortable to sit and good to drive. We took the full tank of petrol option at $2.59 per litre and it was a great idea. Benefit all round. Possibly not the cheapest option but certainly the best for a great and safe trip.

Cons:

At pickup was informed Invercargil roads were all closed (which was untrue), so I may not be able to drop the car off at scheduled point, but if I made any changes to the dropoff location I would be charged extra by Budget. Very unhelpful, and very unfair to charge customers extra due to weather events outside of our control.

The requirement to see a physical credit card is onerous. I don't carry my credit cards with me anymore - doing to is a security risk as well as the risk of losing them. All of the required information is encoded on a secure app on my smart phone. The car was a little old, but was comfortable and god to drive. The spring in the folding key was defective, so it was difficult to open.
