KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Cusco

  • Whether you're planning on driving around the city or venturing out to other nearby sites, car hire in Cusco is the ideal opportunity to take control of the holiday yourself and spend time exploring the Sacred Valley, visiting nearby towns and cities, driving yourself to the Inca trail or cruising around the city – all of this without having to negotiate with your Spanish taxi driver or try as you might to figure out the bus or tour schedules in and around the city. Cusco is a city not to be missed, and driving yourself around is a great way to see it.
  • Car hire in Cusco Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) is perfect if you're planning on flying out of the country from there as well. You'll save on taxi costs. Unfortunately, there aren't any car hire desks operating at the airport, but there are several companies that'll meet you at the airport if you make an online booking through KAYAK. You will be met in the Arrival hall and escorted to your Cusco car hire.
  • Driving in Cusco isn't much different from driving in other parts of Peru, the streets are small and pedestrians are frequent guests. You'll need to keep an eye out for people crossing the road and expect the unexpected. You'll need to obey local speed limits and driving rules but be aware that locals probably won't. Drivers in Cusco can be aggressive and will overtake when they can. Don't get into an argument; just brush off any incidents.
  • A difficult thing about driving in Cusco and other parts of Peru is the crazy traffic situations and driving of other locals. Although roads are delineated into lanes, the locals don't adhere to these rules and you could end up with numerous vehicles in the same lane or in opposite directions. There are times you will need to drive aggressively. Bear in mind, that locals use their horns all the time, signalling everything from "I'm passing" to "get out of my way" to "you can go in front of me". It isn't an aggressive thing, it's more of a courtesy.

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Cusco?

The roads in Cusco are much like the rest of Peru, especially the cities; they're narrow and traffic is heavy along most of them. These roads suit smaller, more compact and thinner models because they're easier to navigate and use up less fuel. If you're travelling in a larger group, large car hire in Cusco will do, but try to find a model that's thinner than most. You'll want to avoid anything flashy like a convertible when hiring a car in Cusco. If you can find a smaller four-wheel drive; that'll be the better option to deal with rough roads on the outskirts and between cities.

  • What’s the speed limit in Cusco?

The speed limits in Cusco are the same as in the rest of Peru. When driving within city limits, the limit you'll stick to will be 50 km/h; while travelling on the open road, it’s limited to 90 km/h. If you're driving along major highways or motorways, the speed limit is capped at 100 km/h. Bear in mind, that locals tend to treat these limits as guidelines rather than the law, but you'll need to obey them, especially in the city, to avoid getting into trouble with the law.

  • Where are the best places to park in Cusco?

There isn't much official parking space in Cusco unless you're close to a retail facility or centre, but these are generally unpaid parking spaces. It's important to try to find a hotel that offers free parking, to avoid leaving your car on the street in the evenings. Outside of the odd car park, most drivers in Cusco park their vehicles on the street where they can.

Pros:

Actually my trip was cancelled by me and I didn't have any problem with Europecar.

Cons:

But I also had purchased an insurance policy by Alianz. Europecar reminded me to cancel insurance also but Alianz haven't replied to my requests. So I've lost money for insurance.

Pros:

We didn't die.

Cons:

No pick up at airport which had been arranged. Taxi to office at my expense. Car was not ready for 2 1/2 hours- meant we had to drive at night which I wanted to avoid. Male rep pointed to left rear tire then to the where the jack was located. Tire went flat as we got near our hotel first night. Jack was not fitted for the vehicle (which had 97,000, kilos on it. Also duct tape on running panels, both sides of car.) Returned the car early but office was closed despite the sign saying they were open from 3-7 pm We were there at 5 pm. Was charge $40 for the flat time despite extra insurance I bought. Would never rent from Europe car again.

Pros:

They offered us a new Toyota

Cons:

Insurance was offered, which we took, but later found out that it only covered 80 percent. Extra drive if not a spouse/ husband is extra $5 per day.

Cons:

Pick up was a little slow. But we did change cars so that was part of it. Took over an hour to pick up. Other than that, no problems.

Aug 2019

KAYAK

Pros:

The staff was friendly.

Cons:

We put a small (less than one inch) scratch on the corner of the car on a panel that already had 3 or 4 much larger scratches that had not been repaired. To repair the scratch we were charged a ridiculous amount, particularly considering that they obviously do not repair small scratches.

Jun 2021

KAYAK

Pros:

The location was close to the airport.

Cons:

Didn't have a full tank of gas in the car (only a little more than 1/4 tank filled). When I left, I asked if they'd reimburse me if I brought the car back with additional gasoline and was told they would. But then I returned it, I was told I wouldn't get the money back for the additional gas in the car. I had to fight it until they gave me something. Car was not cleaned thoroughly (there were tickets from past renters still in the car) and the vehicle's brakes were in HORRIBLE condition. Additionally, they try to put a $5,000 USD hold on your credit card if you don't get insurance with them.

Car hire insurance in Cusco

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) & Theft Protection Waiver

Some Cusco car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend always be aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Cusco.

Deductible

Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a no-deductible option to your Cusco car hire.
