Pros:
This "minshuku" is an older-style building and provides a different sort of experience from staying in accommodation in cities. All the other guests were Japanese, so it's important to remember to change from shoes to slippers (and vice versa) where appropriate. It's also in a small onsen (hot spring) town (Maruo Onsen), so the minshuku actually has its own small hot spring / mineral bath, which was really good. There aren't many restaurants around in the small town, so I opted for the "breakfast included" option. That was the right decision. The Japanese-style breakfast was excellent, was a little different every morning and was great value for money. The dining room downstairs was a comfortable, warm temperature, and Japanese tea / hot water was provided in a thermos / jug in my tatami room. The room itself was sufficient for my needs and the futon was very comfortable. (A softer base is provided too in case sleeping on the futon and tatami feels too hard.) The older ladies working there are extremely friendly but I don't think they speak much English. I asked if they provided an evening meal but it would have been extremely expensive. I found another cheaper, excellent local restaurant about 10 minutes' walk back towards the "town". I hired a car as any buses were infrequent and involved changes and delays. Again, that was the right decision. That enabled me to get to various hiking spots, other "onsen" (some wonderful, atmospheric places in the area) and the Open Air Art Museum, which is well worth a visit. Kirishima Jingu and its surrounding area is also worth visiting. This place was excellent value for money and a perfect base for visiting the Kirishima area. I would certainly stay there again. A really enjoyable, different experience overall.
Cons:
After making my initial reservation, I didn't get any answers to some questions I had. That was probably because the people there don't appear to speak much English. I was a little concerned by that but my booking and the actual payment (in cash only) all went very smoothly. The outside door is locked at 9 pm. It seems a bit early at first but then again, you're in the countryside and if you've been out exploring the area during the day, had dinner, then an "onsen", you're probably ready for an early night anyway.

Pros:
We stayed at different Minshuku's on our trip across Kyushu. This place was very basic and wasn't as comfortable as others. It is located south of the town center, which is still in walkable distance. We found a nice restaurant in town. Although it was not perfect, it still was a good base for trips to the region.

Pros:
Compared to other places in Maruo Onsen, this guesthouse is so much cheaper, but it is still extremely clean and comfortable. It's a ten minute walk to the main bus stop which brings you pretty much anywhere around the area. I love how you have your own sink and toilet attached to your room.
Cons:
Sometimes it felt like the staff were a bit impatient with me, but other than those few moments they were extremely warm and welcoming

Pros:
The owners really made me feel at home. I never met such polite hosts: they took care of me like they were my grandmas, providing me with snacks, tea and suggestions. Room was really clean and already warm. Although I'm not used to some flavours, I really appreciated the Japanese breakfast. The place is far from Kirishima-Jingu Station, but near the bus stop to Ebino Kogen. ありがとうございました!
Cons:
Everything was ok!
