As petrol prices are quite high in and around Ankara, it is recommended to rent an economy car rather than a big petrol eater. A smaller car will also allow you to whizz in and out of the city easier as well as find a parking spot.
Speed limits in Turkey are given in kilometers per hour and within city limits up to 50 km/h (31 mph) is permitted. On rural roads outside built-up areas, up to 90 km/h (55 mph) can be driven and up to 120 km/h (74 mph) on highways. Always adhere to the speed limits and reduce your speed if the road conditions are poor.
Petrol is pretty expensive in Ankara compared to the US, but is lower compared to some European countries. The average price is around 6 Turkish Lira per liter ($1.12, or $4.23 per gallon). In many petrol stations, you pay at the counter after refilling the tank. Usually cash and cards are accepted, but remember that cards often require the input of a PIN (personal identification number), so have cash prepared if you don’t have a PIN.
Parking in Ankara is not as complicated as in many other cities, and parking is widely available. On-street parking is often metered or has parking attendants who tell you how much to pay and also look after the car while you’re gone. Parking restrictions are indicated by a red or yellow line on the curb, and there are also garages and paid parking lots available for longer or overnight parking, like Aydin Parking or the Volcano Car Park.
