Driving in Ecuador is pleasant, thanks to its well-maintained roads. The following rules apply: you must always drive on the right-hand side of the road and wear your seatbelt. When you rent a car in Ecuador, you will always need to carry a valid driver’s license, registration, and insurance documents. You will find that the Pan-American Highway, which extends through 14 countries including Ecuador, is a toll road. Typical toll fees are as little as $1.

Drivers need to be at least 21 years old to rent a car in Ecuador. You must also hold a valid driver’s license from your home country. Any drivers under the age of 25 years old may incur a young drivers surcharge. You do not need an international driving license, just your domestic license and passport, to rent a car in the country.
