Traffic can be bad at times, so I suggest getting a place right in the middle of the island, so you can see the best of both the north and south side has to offer. Also, if you can leave the car and walk to the place, that would be best.

We were unable to go to Hawaii because of COVID. They charged us over $700.00 for a car we never used. I will never book thru Priceline or use Thrifty ever again. Trying to talk to them about this was a waste of time. They just kept repeating that the reservation was not cancelable.

Cons:

Recognize that the traveler can't foresee state law changes and that charging people for a car they never used is both immoral, bad business practice and pisses people off. I will never use Priceline or Thrifty again. And we travel all over the world.

The rental location is really convenient if you are staying at Kauai Beach Resort, because that is where the rental office is located. We found this rental location on Kayak and thought it was located at the airport in Lihue. Luckily for us, we were staying at the KBR. We did have to take a $20 dollar cab each way. So the deals that were close in price (less than the $40 difference in Airport location vs off-site), are the ones we would have chosen.

Car was picked up at a resort located 3 miles from airport--Hertz office, but no transportation was provided. We had to pay to get there. $44 each way (3-miles from LIH) or pay $150 drop-off fee. This was not disclosed at time of online reservation. Car was not clean and seemed old. Did not have opportunity to discuss with rental rep. as they were busy with another customer. Additional fees/taxes were added, even though this was a PRE-PAID rental that INCLUDED TAXES.

I have never been assigned such an old and poorly maintained car. The car was out of windshield washer fluid which turned to be not safe when we happened to need it. I was expecting a better car from a tier1 car rental company like Hertz, very disappointing.

Keep was great! Grouchy staff during pickup and especially drop off. The Jeep had mud on it when we picked up which we didn’t care that much but of course we put more mud on the week we had it and the manager lectured us saying he wanted to charge us $250 cleaning fee. We settled on $35 which I suppose was fair. Website says don’t worry about cleaning but you actually better bring it back clean. Heads up.

The 4 dr keep wrangler had no power locks or windows…therefore no way to easily u knock and lock the car. Super base model. It was fairly new but we saw several others w nicer trims. Separately the fuel wasn’t full at pickup. We did 150 miles and were empty and had to fill up. Didn’t have time to haggle at the counter so I have to call them about that. We paid well over $100+ per day and the value wasn’t worth it.

At the Lihue a/p check-in counter, there were a lot of extra charges added to the bill. Plus charging $18.00 daily to add a second driver. When I asked for an explanation about the extra charges, there was just a take it or leave it attitude. They were not friendly nor helpful. However everything about the car itself was great. It was bigger than expected, so all of us were comfortable and the surfboard fit into the back without a problem. I would probably rent from Dollar again, but not at in Lihue.

The wait for our car in line was over an hour. We got a chair for an elderly lady that we eventually moved to head of the line. They charged us an additional $214 saying you didn’t send those fees with our payment. The car was great, but the service needed more people to accommodate very line, out the door, line! Very slow, not congenital person!

There was a 2 hour wait list to pick up car in 80 degree weather and none of the vending machines were stocked to have something cold to drink while waiting. Finally we got up to the counter where we were greeted by the manager who breezed us through and we got a Jeep. Unfortunately, the Jeep had manual locks and windows which I didn’t realize newer cars still had manual entry so for the entire trip we had to reach across seats and reach behind to the back seats to unlock everyone’s doors. What a missed opportunity to market the newest Jeeps. Dropping off a car was much less painful and we were able to pull up, get out and hop on shuttle back to airport in less than 5 minutes. Dollar really needs to come up with faster process for pick up or provide comfort stations during the wait.

The woman outside checking on reservations was very kind. The billing was not easy to understand. When you place the order it says you were charged the quoted amount. When you are at the counter they give you an additional bill. Seemed to add up to the original amount but was confusing.

Cons:

The billing part could have been better. The car was not very clean inside but was a good car and comfortable. The staffing was very understaffed. Three car rental companies inside and only one or two staff. Should be one staff person per car company. Very long wait in line.

Cons:

Location is NOT at airport - there is NO shuttle. Uber / Lyft are NOT readily available. Must rely on taxi, which is hit or miss from the airport. I had to walk the 1.8 miles from the airport to get to Enterprise before it closed.

I made my reservation months in advance requesting a small SUV, but when I arrived they had none. What is the point of making a reservation if the vehicle is not available upon arrival? They offered me other larger vehicles, which I finally accepted, otherwise I would be without a vehicle. Was very unhappy driving a large SUV in unfamiliar locations.

Chrissy at check in was great. Full of local knowledge and extremely friendly. Both shuttle drivers were very helpful and informative. Office was closed going home, but there was a shuttle there at six to get us to the airport. Would definitely use Sixt again.

They will give your car "away" if you are running late and then only have higher end vehicles that they upsell you on. Happened to several people, seems like a pattern-even though you have a non-refundable deposit -they will give your car away if an hour later than time you designate. Class action anyone?

Waited in line for the car for >2hrs, mostly outside in the heat. The car I got was much worse than the one I booked and was not clean. Horrible experience.

Pros:

Car was fine staff was fast.

Cons:

4 days cost more than bringing it back & getting an upgrade for a week separately. Together price would have been $1500. Separately (2 reservations rather than 1) was $580 & $340. Ridiculous.

Pros:

Pick up and drop off went very smoothly. SUV was adequate and handled the island's roads very well. We had a late arriving flight and the office stayed open past normal hours to accommodate our reservation.

Cons:

Expected a RAV4 - got a Hyundai SUV instead. Not a big deal though.

Took forever to get car. Had flat tire on top of Waimea canyon. Tire was bald and no owners manual to help figure out where spare tire was. Waited 2 hrs and still no tow truck. Finally found someone with same vehicle and looked at owners manual regarding spare tire. We would appreciate a partial reimbursement for our terrible day!!

Pros:

Car was comfortable - outwardly seemed clean - staff was nice

Cons:

Car smelled like cat pee almost from the time we drove out. The operation was very small and not what we expected from a front line car rental company - obviously contracted out. Not much inventory to pick from and I felt the professionalism was lacking - would never rent from them again. Gave us an uneasy feeling in regards to the paperwork we were given in the onset.

Our car had major issues. It was 13 years old with 100,00 miles on it. Windshield wipers didn't work, it started to overheat while we were sightseeing, the whole car would shake violently when you braked and the transmission was slipping gears when accelerating from a stop. It was like a bad joke.

Pros:

We were picked up by our friendly driver who was happy to answer any touristy question. On our way to the rental company, he called the guy in the office to get our car ready. The process was very speedy.

Cons:

We did not get the type of car we ordered but nevertheless were happy with the rental company overall.

The price. But i think it was actually reasonable given the prices in Kauai and probably better than most.
