September is still technically summer and with kids back to school and peak-season prices on the decline, it may just be the best time to book a flight and take advantage of the late-season sun.

Looking to soak up every last drop of lingering summer heat? We’ve rounded up six destinations that are still hot in September. The hard part will be choosing just one; the easy part is finding that flight (hint: head to KAYAK.ie).

Athens, Greece

September weather is perfect for multitasking – sightsee while working on your tan

Athens is a heady mix of historical elegance and metropolitan hustle – all with a balmy 25°C average temp in September. The Acropolis citadel, which holds the Parthenon, is an obvious must, but also explore other sites, including the Temple of Hephaestus, which gives an especially well-preserved look back in time. Unified tickets are available, making it possible to explore a few different sites for one price. Admission to the Acropolis is free the last weekend of September, so it’s also the best month to visit if you’re looking to save.

Pro tip: A favourite local activity is walking up Strefi Hill, located next to hipster neighbourhood Exarcheia. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with a 360-degree view of the city. Stop by Alexandrino Cafe Bistro for a coffee on the way back to the city and enjoy the local atmosphere.

Fuerteventura, Spain

High temperatures + a light breeze = the perfect September holiday

One of the lesser visited Canary Islands, Fuerteventura has an impressive average high of 28°C in September thanks to its proximity to the West African coast. Take advantage of the light breeze present throughout the year, which gives this island its nickname as ‘the island of eternal spring’. Whether you’re all about lazing on a sunlounger or getting a bit more adventurous with your beach activities – surfing, kiteboarding and windsurfing are all on offer – there’s something for every type of beachgoer. When you’ve worked up a sufficient appetite, dine on fresh local seafood in laid-back El Cotillo.

Pro tip: If you’re looking for a more lively experience, head to Corralejo, where a vibrant strip of bars, restaurants and clubs are steps from the beach. For a more relaxing getaway, El Cotillo is the place to be. Located on the western part of the island, catching a sunset there is a must, regardless of where you’re sunning.

Marrakesh, Morocco

While cooler than the summer months, Marrakesh is still hot in September

Marrakesh is the ultimate autumnal destination, with the weather staying warm well into October. In September you’ll enjoy averages of around 25°C, the perfect temperature to explore the medina – Marrakesh’s old town full of winding, labyrinth-like streets, hidden courtyards and vibrant souks. While there are plenty of hotels in Marrakesh, spend at least one night in a local riad within the medina. These traditional Moroccan homes are typically centred around a lush courtyard and put you right in the centre of the action.

Pro tip: You will get lost in the medina. If there’s someplace you have to be, give yourself extra time to get there. But if you’re not on a schedule, enjoy getting lost.

São Paulo, Brazil

Sun, street art, music and mouthwatering treats? Yes, please

With average high temperatures are 24°C, Septembers are a pleasant time to see the city. Wander the vibrant Vila Madalena neighbourhood for some of the world’s best street art, including a stop in Beco do Batman (Batman’s Alley).

If you’re visiting over a weekend, spend Saturday at the all-day market in Benedito Calixto square. Aside from shopping, you’ll find authentic Brazilian treats like pastel (deep-fried puff pastry with different fillings) and live music (dancing starts at noon).

Pro tip: For a taste of authentic Brazilian country-cuisine you’ll be spoilt for choice, but an excellent not-too-expensive option is Tordesilhas.

Sofia, Bulgaria

Sofia is a city made for sun-filled days of autumn exploring

Sofia is an interesting city for first-time visitors and, with average temperatures of 24°C, September is an ideal time to see it for yourself. Mostly modern suburbs are scattered with dome-shaped churches and Ottoman mosques. A great example of this, and a favourite amongst visitors, is the Church of St. George, the oldest building in the city.

Pro tip: Rakia is a must-try when in Bulgaria. This local fruit brandy goes down smooth and is a perfect after-dinner treat. Head to Raketa Rakia Bar for its vast selection of rakias – and to eat something before you do too much tasting.

Lisbon, Portugal

Get the most from summer by squeezing in a Lisbon holiday this September

With a comfortable average of 22°C in September, taking advantage of those last moments of summer sun is quite easy in Lisbon. On top of the climate, food and culture, architecture lovers should visit Belém Tower, a fortified tower that runs into the Tagus River and looks as though it sprung from the pages of a fantasy novel.

Pro tip: For souvenirs, head to Feira da Ladra. Translated as Thieves’ Market, it’s the largest flea market in Lisbon. Popular with locals, you’ll find clothes, furnishings and oddities.
