The practical flair and conceptual creativity of Lecce master sculptors have been easily to applied thanks to the use of a particular material, the local stone, or “poor marble”. Lecce has a very wide architectural and artistic heritage; visiting it means to immerse oneself in an open air museum, where the local stone is the common denominator of palaces, churches, fortifications. Among the many churches in the city the Basilica of Santa Croce is worth visiting. Its construction began in 1353 but it was only completed in 1699. In the old part of the town the cathedral stands. It faces the charming Piazza Duomo together with the bishop’s palace, the seminary and bell tower. Do not miss the castle, rebuilt on Charles V’s order and designed by Gian Giacaomo dell'Acaya.
