KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Antigua

  • Using car rentals in Antigua is one of the best ways to explore the city and its surroundings. It provides flexibility and freedom to explore Antigua and its surroundings at your own time and pace. Renting a car in Antigua provides convenience in carrying luggage or shopping items and eliminates the need to navigate unfamiliar public transportation systems. It also enables you to access remote areas and scenic routes that may not be easily reachable by other modes of transportation. With Antigua car rentals, you can visit Lake Atitlán, Chichicastenango, and Tikal.
  •  La Aurora Airport (GUA) is the most likely airport to land when you visit Antigua. La Aurora Airport (GUA) houses many companies for car rentals in Antigua that are ready to hire a car to explore beautiful Antigua. The rental companies at GUA have offices just outside the main terminal, either on 7A Avenida or Calle 14. Their car fleets are also conveniently located nearby, within a short walking distance. Once you have completed the required paperwork, a staff member will usually hand you the car key and accompany you to where the vehicle is stored.
  • Driving in car rentals in Antigua requires awareness of the local driving style and conditions. The roads in Antigua are generally well-maintained but narrow and can be congested, especially in the city center. The driving style in Antigua can be a mix of calm and impatient. While some drivers may be relaxed, others can display impatience and assertiveness. It is essential to stay alert and follow traffic rules, as not all drivers may respect them consistently. Bicycles are common on the roads, so it is important to watch out for them. Jaywalking is prevalent, and pedestrians may leave unexpectedly, so caution is advised. The common vehicles on the road include cars, motorcycles, tuk-tuks (small three-wheeled taxis), and local buses.
  • Driving car rentals in Antigua can present certain difficulties. Rush hour (6 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 7 pm), especially during weekdays, can lead to heavy traffic and congestion, particularly on major routes such as Calle del Arco and 5a Avenida Norte. Avoiding these areas during peak times, typically early mornings and late afternoons is advisable. Another challenge is the presence of one-way streets throughout the city. It is important to familiarize yourself with the direction of the streets and pay attention to signage to avoid getting into the wrong lane.
  • Book your car hire in Antigua at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Economy car hire in Antigua are around 42% cheaper than other car types, on average

Not easy to drive in Guatemala City. Antigua was much easier. Most streets are one way. Stop signs are sometimes not easy to see. Use Google or Waze for sure.😊

Driving in Guatemala City can be a nightmare. Much prefer a car or shuttle to Antigua, can easily drive anywhere from there. Price is often less renting from Antighua, that’s a plus.

Small and well organized office at upscale hotel in Antigua. Always great service, car as ordered and ready. So much better than the crash at the airport. Highly recommend.

First of all, the location at Hotel Casa Santo Domingo doesn't exist, so I had to call the Hertz 1-800 number. First time they reassured me that yes everything is fine with the reservation, as mentioned, it didn't exist. The second time I called the 1-800 number they tried to convince me that it existed even though I was literally at the supposed location. They then suggested that I should walk (across town) to the other location to take my chances and see if they might have a vehicle and it wasn't until I insisted that they try to make those arrangements over the phone (as the customer service should) did they try to fix it. Never got a confirmation email, but luckily I asked for the revised number because when I got to the second location they couldn't find the information in their system. They also forgot to tell me that the time I had reserved it for was actually the time they were planning to leave from Guatemala City to transport the vehicle to the location? So I had to sit there and wait for another 2 hours. Then, when doing the contract, there were a TON of additional fees that were NOT disclosed when booking online, such as an international license fee, which originally was ~500Q but when I returned the contract they increased it to ~600Q??? The staff was nice, and when I reported minor damage they waived it, which was very nice of them. Overall though, terrible experience. You should stop listing the Hotel Casa Santo Domingo location on KAYAK and you should disclose all of the fees in advance.

Carmen at the reception was very friendly, could speak English, and gave me her WhatsApp number in case I had any problem. The pickup took over 30 min to be completed. It was pretty slow.

Car hire insurance in Antigua

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) & Theft Protection Waiver

Some Antigua car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend always be aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Antigua.

Deductible

Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a no-deductible option to your Antigua car hire.
